ADVANCING HEALTHCARE PRACTICE

Small grants awarded during 2006

Developing practice to reduce hospital acquired infections on a vascular ward.

Project leader:

Susan Smith

Location

New Cross Hospital, The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust

Summary of initiative:

The Vascular Ward comprises of 21 general beds and a 4 bedded high dependency. The ward team recognise that the patients they care for have complex healthcare needs and are at high risk of infection. Reducing these risks and preventing the spread of infection is both important and challenging. The team acknowledge that traditional approaches to the prevention and control of infection such as policies, audit and surveillance have limited effect and so they want to work in a new and more innovative way. With support from the infection control team and modern matron, they have started by exploring what reducing healthcare acquired infections means to all members of the ward team. The next stage is underway and this involves exploring these issues with the wider multiprofessional team, patients and visitors.

The staff have recently won the trust-wide Infection Prevention Award 2006 in recognition of their achievements in combating hospital acquired infections. Further development of this work has also led to the trust winning the HSJ Patient Safety Award 2007.
