ADVANCING HEALTHCARE PRACTICE

Small projects supported during 2007

An Expressive Art Group for those Affected by Cancer at the FORCE Cancer Support Centre

Project leader:

Robert Oliver

Location:

FORCE Cancer Support Centre, Exeter

Summary of initiative:

The FORCE Cancer Support Centre provides free support and advice to anyone affected by cancer (patients, relatives and carers). On average, over 250 people visit the Centre per week to take up a range of services including support and counselling, information and library facilities, complimentary therapies, relaxation and support groups.

Whilst the Centre's existing services involve important 'talk and touch' opportunities, this project seeks to add a further dimension to support by providing an outlet through which patients and carers can express their feelings and explore their creativity and personal resources through art using materials like pastels, chalk, oils, pencil, charcoal etc. The project will be evaluated from the perspectives of all those involved.
