The EFN Publishes Report on the Impact of the Financial Crisis on Nurses and Nursing

Comparative overview of 34 European countries provides valuable insights into a healthcare system under pressure and illustrates current and future challenges

Brussels - The European Federation of Nurses Associations (EFN) has published a new country-by-country report on the impact of the economic crisis on nurses and nursing in Europe. The report illustrates the current and future challenges facing the nursing profession, and offers a view of the specific dynamics in each country, as well as a tool to take action and tackle these challenges.

Through the new report, the EFN members are calling for attention to an area crucially affected by the financial crisis but which has been overlooked, and urge the EU to take notice to enable nurses across Europe maintain the high standards they are trained to uphold.

The report is based on valuable input received from the EFN members at Tour de Table discussions during EFN General Assemblies in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

11 new project reports have been added to the Library. All these projects were part of the FoNS Developing and Sustaining a Practice-based Strategy for Reducing Healthcare Associated Infections Programme in partnership with London SHA.

The reports demonstrate positive outcomes in relation to improving infection control and prevention practices, reducing infections and enhancing cleanliness. This was achieved by engaging with stakeholders (staff and patients) to develop a greater understanding of roles and responsibilities, enhance knowledge and skills and increase confidence to challenge poor practice.

Adapting to the current pace of change in the health and social care landscape is a huge challenge – politically, organisationally and financially – creating a number of important questions for your organisation:

  • What is the role of NICE and where does it fit in with the current reforms?
  • How are quality standards being used in practice?
  • How will NICE work with the NHS Commissioning Board?
  • How can we foster a better working relationship between NHS and industry?

Against this backdrop of an ever-changing NHS landscape, one thing is constant – the central role of NICE, which will help you to make the best use of evidence, guidance and quality standards to commission and provide high quality care.
