Home News & Views FoNS Comment: Skills for Care Report on workforce in England
The size and structure of the adult social care sector and workforce in England
We were pleased to read this report from Skills for Care about the current size and structure of the social care workforce. It is great to see that the increased number of filled posts, and that vacancy rates have decreased within the sector. Turnover has also reduced, which is believed in part due to an increase in international recruitment. This feels positive, however in order to continue to meet demand, the sector requires more recruitment, especially as international recruitment slowing down, and a reduction in turnover.
As Ooangh Smyth states, this is going to need the building of a resilient workforce. We are pleased to see that the recommendation is not just about building resilient individuals within the sector but recognises the importance of stable recruitment and retention, as well as making the roles more attractive to applicants.
Resilience-based clinical supervision can help with the development of a resilient organisation, and we are delighted to be continuing to offer champion and cascade programmes to nurses working within the sector for free. As well as an opportunity for continuing professional development for the individual nurses, which we know helps with recruitment and retention, it also enables nurses to build the skills and competencies to implement an evidence-based model within the workplace. Here is what some of the participants say:
“I have found the FoNS facilitated Resilience Based Clinical Supervision (RBCS) to be a key step any Social Care provider can take in ensuring their employees feel supported to excel in their roles whilst creating a safe space for open communication through active listening.”
“A new and exciting way to deliver clinical supervision which is not just a tick box exercise but a useful tool for staff wellbeing and ensuring safe, high-quality care”
