Yellow is the colour of sunshine
By Lexi Sandham, Executive Assistant to Joanne Bosanquet and FoNS Office Administrator
Yellow is the colour of sunshine, happiness and joy. It can be warm and comforting or signify the beginning of spring and spontaneity.
However you feel about the shade, it cannot be denied that it is the colour of hope, and as such I want to take this opportunity to take about Friday 12 June, as it is Wear Yellow Day! The CF Trust annual event as part of CF Week to raise awareness and funding for the 11,000+ people in the UK with the condition.
Cystic Fibrosis (or CF) is a genetic condition that primarily affects a person’s lungs, liver and digestive system (but does affect the whole body), by producing additional mucus. This makes it difficult to breathe, causes chronic inflammations of the lungs, and difficulty digesting food. While there is currently no cure for the condition, treatments for symptoms include medication, physiotherapy, exercise and mental health support.
There are over 2,000 identified mutations of the CF gene, meaning each person has different experiences of the symptoms of CF. No two treatment plans are the same, and the work that goes into keeping us all as healthy as we can be is incredible.
It is only because of the research into new medications that Kaftrio was able to be developed and stabilise my health, that I am working here at FoNS. I love the work I do here, and being able to give back to the health system that has supported me my whole life is invigorating and something I am hugely passionate about.
CF is relentless, and although I am stable, there is a great unseen impact. National events like this allow us to bring those unseen elements into the light, and I encourage you to read some of the links below, and maybe even listen to a podcast episode or two. People never get a day off with CF, and for this event every year, you are invited into our world to learn, understand, and most importantly – celebrate progress!
Having a life-limiting chronic illness isn’t always the most exciting part of life, but every year in June as Wear Yellow Day comes around, I am reminded of the incredible team of people who work together to make such a difference to me and so many others. From researchers to fundraisers, technicians to specialists, and of course, nurses!
