The Person-centred Podcast – Stories that shape us

We are partnering with colleagues from Listen Up Story Telling to share stories of person-centred moments.

Sheila in action!

Sheila who is one of our Person-centred Practice Facilitators has always been drawn to storytelling and the way it connects people and helps us understand one another on a deeper, more human level. After attending an introduction to dramatherapy course at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, this interest deepened as she began to see the powerful links between storytelling and person-centred approaches. Since then, Sheila has been enjoying the ongoing process of peeling back the layers of learning and discovery within storytelling

Caroline at the mic!

Caroline is part of the Social Enterprise, Listen Up Storytelling (LUS), whose mission is to ‘create healthy spaces and effective places through applied storytelling’. LUS work with all sorts of organisations to give people a voice and help them advocate for themselves and others. Caroline is joined by her colleague Kath MacDonald. They both started this journey as nurse academics and, combining their strengths of storytelling and practice development they developed a programme of work that has storytelling at its heart. They have had a long-standing connection with FoNS, probably because of our shared values and commitment to person-centredness.

There seemed to be an obvious synergy in our work and so when Sheila and Caroline were recently co-facilitating on a FoNS programme and realised their shared love of storytelling, the idea for the Person-centred Podcast – stories from nurses and midwives, was formed.

We wanted to start with a series that told the stories of nurses and midwives who are ‘doing the doing’ with the people they are caring for on a daily basis – those among our professions who don’t always have their voices heard. Our first series is called Stories that Shape Us and in it, we share stories of how nurses and midwives are shaped by the connections they make with the people they care for, their families or their colleagues.

We create a space where our guests can explore person-centredness and what it truly means.

Listen to A Warm Blanket on a Cold Night

In this podcast our lovely guest midwife Anne-Marie shares her story about the loss of her baby, and how that experience and subsequent experiences of having children including a person-centred birth story, contributed to her becoming a midwife.

Anne-Marie also shares how she makes sure to find those person-centred moments in her own work as a midwife, and the importance it has.
